Young Hands, New Roots: Local FFA & 4-H Youth Plant Trees to Renew Deming for Earth Day

DEMING – Luna County youth are rolling up their sleeves for Earth Day as members of local FFA and 4-H clubs join County Extension Agent Jack Blandford to plant new trees in a community restoration effort on South Silver Street.

The tree-planting event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. today at what Blandford described as the location of the county’s “old” courthouse. Officials emphasized that the project site is not the current courthouse park, but rather the historic courthouse area nearby.

Blandford said local youth groups received a grant from the New Mexico Forestry Division to take part in a coordinated tree-planting initiative spanning six communities across southwest New Mexico. Participating communities include Deming, Lordsburg, Silver City, Santa Clara and Bayard, all working toward improving local landscapes and strengthening long-term environmental health.

Part of the effort involves removing aging trees that are in the process of dying and replacing them with new ones to ensure the region continues to benefit from healthy tree coverage. Blandford noted that maintaining tree life is important not only for appearance, but also for shade, soil stability and overall community well-being.

Approximately 10 to 15 local youth are expected to take part in the project, representing Luna County’s ongoing commitment to conservation, education and community service through agricultural and environmental programs.
