DEMING – Drivers in Deming and throughout Luna County can expect to see sobriety checkpoints and increased patrol activity during April as part of a statewide traffic safety campaign by the New Mexico State Police.
Law enforcement officials say the checkpoints and saturation patrols will take place locally in Deming and other areas of Luna County, while similar enforcement operations are also scheduled in all 33 counties across New Mexico. The effort will include sobriety checkpoints, targeted patrols focused on impaired driving, and stops to verify vehicle registration, insurance, and driver’s licenses.
State Police say the goal of the campaign is to reduce crashes and fatalities linked to impaired driving by increasing visibility and reminding motorists to make responsible choices. Officials emphasize that public awareness and consistent enforcement can help change attitudes about driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The enforcement operations are supported by overtime grant funding from the New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division. That funding allows law enforcement agencies to increase patrol coverage, provide training and education, and focus resources on areas where impaired driving remains a concern.
Authorities are encouraging drivers in Deming and Luna County to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or arrange alternative transportation if alcohol or drugs are involved. The checkpoints and patrols will continue throughout April as part of the statewide ENDWI initiative aimed at making roads safer for everyone.
