DEMING – A new outdoor education multi-purpose turf field at Columbus Elementary School has recently been completed, giving students a new space designed for both recreation and physical education activities.
The project was the result of more than a year of planning and collaboration between district employees Viridiana Chacon and Bernie Chavez and designers from Shaw Turf. Together they developed a multi-use layout that allows the field to support a wide variety of activities for students.
The new field includes a regulation soccer field, two mini soccer fields, a four-lane track, and two kickball fields built to the same scale as youth baseball fields. The design also incorporates a number of activity stations including tire circles, giant tic-tac-toe, running bags, 5-10-5 pro-agility drills, figure-eight running patterns, running ladders and dot drills. Featured at center field is a large design of the school’s Charlie Wildcat mascot.
Construction work included removing the existing turf and preparing the site for the new field. The work was completed by Four Rivers, Inc., a licensed park and recreation contractor that handled the removal of the previous surface and regraded and prepared the site for the installation of the new turf.
Four Rivers, Inc. is based in Deming and specializes in recreation-area construction, landscaping and masonry projects. The company has been operating for more than a decade and works on projects such as playground construction, outdoor recreation improvements and other specialty construction services. District officials say the new field will support a variety of physical education activities and outdoor learning opportunities for students while providing a safe and modern recreation area. Maintenance of the field will be handled by the district’s Facilities Groundskeeping Team, which has the training and equipment necessary to keep the field in good condition for years to come.
