DEMING – Voters in Luna County made their choices known Tuesday in the Regular Local Election, deciding several city council seats, school board positions, and two major bond questions for the City of Deming and Deming Public Schools. Turnout in the county reached just over 21 percent, with all 18 precincts reporting.
In the race for Deming City Council District 2, Laura Mairel Parra received 40 percent of the vote, finishing ahead of Irmaisela A. Rodriguez at 30 percent and Heraclio Martinez Jr. also at 30 percent. The three-way race drew a total of 279 ballots.
For City Council District 3, Catherine E. Gutierrez led the field with 200 votes, or 47 percent. Benny L. Jasso received 171 votes (40 percent), and Joe F. Milo followed with 58 votes (14 percent), for a total of 429 votes cast in the district.
In the Village of Columbus Trustee election, a four-way race ended with Anais Grado leading at 35 percent with 110 votes. Jerad William Loesch and Paulino Provencio Villegas each received 23 percent of the vote, with 73 and 72 votes respectively, while William D. Johnson received 59 votes (19 percent).
The race for Deming Municipal Judge resulted in Edgar B. Davalos receiving 62 percent of the vote, defeating Jessica Marie Jara, who finished with 38 percent. A total of 1,594 votes were cast in that contest.
On the Deming Public Schools Board, District 1 saw Daniel A. Krowl win with 61 percent of the vote, earning 455 votes compared to Jesse Aaron Anderson’s 285 votes (39 percent).
In School Board District 2, Brandy Lee Johnson led with 37 percent (245 votes). Kevin L. Zachek followed with 27 percent (180 votes), Tiffany M. Coleman received 88 votes (13 percent), Chelsea Diane McGinnis had 81 votes (12 percent), and Walter Dale Hand received 65 votes (10 percent), for a total of 659 ballots cast.
The Deming Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor race was decided by 153 votes, with Joel M. Nanez receiving 52 percent (2,030 votes) and Leedrue V. Hyatt receiving 48 percent (1,877 votes).
Two major bond questions appeared on the ballot, and both passed with comfortable margins.
The City of Deming General Obligation Road Bond passed with 71 percent in favor (1,134 yes votes) and 29 percent opposed (466 no votes).
The Deming Public Schools Bond Question passed with 66 percent in favor (1,811 yes votes) and 34 percent opposed (935 votes), for a total of 2,746 ballots cast.
All election results are unofficial until canvassed and certified by the Luna County Board of Commissioners.
