DEMING – Silver Consolidated Schools and Aldo Leopold Charter School have announced an agreement for the purchase of the former Jose Barrios Elementary School campus in Silver City, marking a significant transition for the historic school site.
According to information released by the school districts, the property will be sold for approximately one million, six hundred seventy-five thousand dollars, following months of planning and collaboration between local and state education partners. Funding for the purchase was secured through the New Mexico Finance Authority’s Charter School Revolving Loan Fund to support acquisition and renovation of the facility.
Officials stated that Aldo Leopold Charter School plans to begin operating at the campus starting in the Fall of 2026, after necessary preparations and transition activities are completed. The agreement ensures the facility will continue to be used for educational purposes, serving students and families in Grant County.
Silver Consolidated Schools Superintendent Will Hawkins said the goal throughout the process has been to make sure the building continues to serve the community and support student learning. Leaders from Aldo Leopold Charter School also expressed appreciation for the partnership and emphasized their commitment to honoring the history of the Jose Barrios school community while expanding educational opportunities for future generations.
