DEMING — The Deming High School boys baseball team highlighted a strong weekend of Wildcat athletics, traveling to Artesia for a three-day tournament and turning in an impressive performance against tough competition from across the region. The Wildcats opened the tournament with back-to-back victories, defeating the host Artesia team 4-1 on Thursday before dominating Los Alamos 13-1 on Friday to earn a spot in the championship game. Although Deming fell to Goddard 10-1 in the title matchup on Saturday, the team demonstrated resilience and depth throughout the tournament. The Wildcats now stand at 9-3 overall with a perfect 3-0 mark in district play and will look to carry that momentum into their next road contest against the El Paso Hawks, scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
The Deming High School girls softball team also spent the weekend competing in Artesia, gaining valuable experience in a demanding tournament schedule. The Lady Cats opened play Thursday against Goddard, a team they had previously defeated earlier in the season, but came up short in a 5-3 contest. The team rebounded in strong fashion on Friday, delivering an emphatic 15-1 victory over Los Lunas. Saturday brought a tightly contested 2-1 loss to Bayard Cobre, followed by a determined response later that day as the Lady Cats defeated Bernalillo 12-5. Coaches say the tournament provided important preparation as the team continues district competition. The Lady Cats currently hold a 5-11 overall record and are scheduled to return to action at A.J. Hooten Park on March 27 against Las Cruces Organ Mountain.
Other Deming High School athletic programs also stayed active during the past week. The boys golf team finished fourth at the annual Doña Ana Golf Classic in Las Cruces, a two-day event featuring area schools competing in a 36-hole format. The girls golf team also participated, continuing to build experience against strong competition. Both varsity golf teams are set to host the Deming Invitational on Monday at the Rio Mimbres Golf Course, located at 2400 East Pine Street, with community members invited to attend. Meanwhile, the Wildcat tennis team is scheduled to compete at Chaparral, the track and field team will travel to Las Cruces Organ Mountain for a meet beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and the Wildcat powerlifting team is also slated to compete Saturday morning at the Deming High School weight room, with final details to be announced.
