City Council Meeting Rescheduled; Rail Spur Lease and Ordinances on Agenda

DEMING – The regular monthly meeting of the Deming City Council, originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, has been moved to Tuesday, March 24.

Residents who wish to provide public input may sign up between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Public comments will be heard beginning at 5:00 p.m., followed by the regular city council meeting scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

City officials say the change was made because the city clerk will be attending a professional certification conference during the week of March 17. In addition, a Natural Gas Conference will be held in Mesa, Arizona, where several City of Deming staff members will be participating. Aaron Sera, Cathy Arias, and David McSherry are scheduled to attend that conference.

Several items are expected to be discussed during the March 24 meeting. Councilors will consider ratifying board members to the Deming Senior Center, along with multiple ordinances dealing with abandoned buildings and salvage yard regulations.

Another item on the agenda involves leasing the city-owned rail spur. The rail spur has previously been used by Element Power to offload materials related to wind tower projects. City officials say the new lease would involve Desert Valley Ready Mix, which plans to use the rail line to receive cement supplies for the Deming and Luna County area.

Aaron Sera said demand for cement in the region continues to grow and that transporting cement by rail will help meet local construction needs more efficiently than relying on truck delivery alone. The proposed lease is valued at more than $25,000 annually, and the company is expected to make improvements to the property as part of the agreement.

Sera added that the project reflects continued growth in the local community and increased demand for building materials.

Residents interested in reviewing the proposed ordinances may contact City Hall or visit the city’s website at CityofDeming.org, where draft ordinances are posted for public review.
