DEMING – The Village of Columbus is continuing its effort to reestablish a local police department, marking a key milestone with the addition of two new patrol vehicles designated for the Columbus Police Department.

Village officials say the vehicles represent a tangible step forward in rebuilding a municipal police force after more than a decade without one. The investment signals the village’s commitment to public safety and to creating a modern, community-focused department designed specifically to serve Columbus residents.

Located just three miles from the U.S.–Mexico border, Columbus is home to roughly 1,800 people and maintains strong international and regional ties. Leaders say rebuilding a local department allows the village to shape law enforcement services from the ground up, including equipment, operations, and partnerships with county, state, and federal agencies.

The new patrol vehicles are part of a broader effort to strengthen safety, improve response capabilities, and restore a visible law enforcement presence within the community. Officials expressed pride in the progress being made and noted that additional updates on the department’s development will be shared as the process continues.

Village leaders say the revival of the Columbus Police Department reflects a long-term investment in the community’s future, with a focus on public trust, collaboration, and local control of law enforcement services.
