Cast Your Creativity: Deming Youth Invited to Reel In Prizes at New Mexico Fish Art Contest

DEMING – Young artists across Deming and Luna County still have time to make a splash in the 2026 New Mexico Fish Art Contest, an annual statewide competition that blends creativity, conservation, and outdoor adventure. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to submit original artwork highlighting fish species found in New Mexico, with this year’s contest offering some of the most exciting prizes yet for local winners.

Top artists in the Grade 7–9 and 10–12 categories will be awarded a half-day guided fly fishing trip in Chama, New Mexico, hosted by Mayfly Fly Fishing on public waters. The experience includes waders, boots, rods, bait, and all necessary gear, with open dates available from May through October of 2026, giving students a chance to turn their artistic success into a real-world outdoor adventure.

Younger artists in the K–3 and 4–6 divisions also have a big incentive to participate. First through third place winners in those categories will receive a half-day group fishing experience with professional guide Chris Jarvis, creating a fun and educational opportunity to learn more about fishing and New Mexico’s aquatic wildlife.

Contest organizers extended thanks to the New Mexico Council of Outfitters and Guides and Trout Unlimited for their donations and continued support in helping make the program possible for students statewide.

Artwork must be scanned and submitted through the online entry form by January 31st to be eligible for prizes. Students and families can find full contest details and the submission portal at wildlife.dgf.nm.gov/art-of-conservation.
