DEMING — In a powerful show of community pride and purpose, Western New Mexico University hosted its annual “Pink Out” Night on Tuesday, January 20, at Drag’s Court in Silver City, turning a night of basketball into a meaningful fundraiser for breast cancer awareness and local patient support.
The double-header, featuring the Mustang Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams against Sul Ross State, drew more than 500 fans who filled the stands in shades of pink after arriving early to claim limited-edition WNMU “Pink Out” shirts. Students, faculty, and residents traded the university’s traditional purple and gold for a unified message of solidarity.
The evening’s emotional centerpiece came at halftime, when WNMU Athletics and university leaders presented a donation check to representatives from the Gila Regional Cancer Center (GRCC). Funds raised through ticket sales, commemorative t-shirt purchases, and community donations will remain in Grant County, directly supporting local patients undergoing cancer treatment. In total, the event raised $600 for the center.
“The Pink Out game was one of the most meaningful nights on our athletic calendar,” said Interim President Chris Maples, Ph.D. “It’s about more than just the score on the board. It’s about honoring survivors in our stands, encouraging early detection, and making sure our local cancer center has the resources to continue their life-saving work right here in Silver City. I hope this becomes a highly anticipated annual event for both WNMU and the community.”
On the court, the Mustang Men’s team capped the night with a strong 69–51 victory over the Sul Ross State Lobos, adding a celebratory note to the fundraising effort. Earlier, the Mustang Women battled in a closely contested matchup, coming up just short but joining in the halftime tributes to cancer “fighters and survivors” across the WNMU family.
By directing 100 percent of the event’s proceeds to the Gila Regional Cancer Center, WNMU continues to reinforce its role as a regional leader in social responsibility—transforming Mustang spirit into tangible support, transportation assistance, and wellness resources for neighbors facing cancer.
