No additional jail time for woman who tried to hit officer with her car

DEMING – A woman won’t see any more jail time after leading police on a chase and attempting to strike an officer with her vehicle. In September of last year, a Deming police officer tried to stop a Jeep driving without headlights, which led to a pursuit.

According to KRQE, when the officer approached the driver, she stepped on the gas and nearly hit him. Police later identified her as 33-year-old Kassandra Castro. According to the arrest affidavit, the officer opened fire when Castro accelerated toward him. The vehicle became stuck in a field, where she was taken into custody. Officers later asked why she fled, and Castro reportedly said she “didn’t feel like being pulled over.” When asked why she drove at the officer, she told state police she “hated him.”

Castro was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, aggravated fleeing, and careless driving. She faced more than four years behind bars but pled guilty. Judge Jennifer Delaney ultimately suspended her jail time.
