Juvenile Injured in Overnight Shooting at Duck Race Event

Races Continue Amid Investigation into Carnival Shooting

DEMING – A female juvenile was injured in a shooting that occurred around midnight during the Duck Race carnival late Saturday into early Sunday morning.

Deming Police Chief Sergio Lara confirmed the victim was struck in the upper shoulder and transported to the hospital. Investigators processed the scene and recovered bullet fragments.

“At this time, there’s no clear link to any suspects, and we’re still trying to track down a possible person of interest,” Chief Lara said. “No contact with the suspect yet, but we’re on it.”

Despite the incident, the Great American Duck Race committee said Sunday’s events will continue as planned with a law enforcement presence throughout the day.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred last night at our carnival, and our support is extended to the family of those involved. The safety of our guests and community is our top priority,” the committee said in a statement. “We encourage everyone to come out, enjoy the events, and join us in keeping this tradition strong as a community.”

Chief Lara reminded the public that anyone with information on the incident are asked to call Crimestoppers at 575-546-7800 or online at www.p3tips.com.
